Ok, so this was the only forum I found for UC Berkeley Students. I want to start a Pro-Second amendment club/organization on campus. I have no idea where to begin to look for interested members. So, if you are pro-gun, or like shooting, or you're a NRA member, then please reply. If not, then disregard this message.

I'm a little confused. What exactly do you foresee this club doing? Go to shooting ranges, discussions about gun rights, ...?

Well, I was thinking about both discussion on gun rights/laws and attending the regular NRA meetings in Richmond. I was thinking about having this club be a introduction in firearms in the United States. I think it could break many myths about guns and firearms. I was also thinking about going to a shooting range once in a while for some fun.

you should probably think about the full implications of talking about firearms on a college campus.  so far guns and college campuses have not exactly had the best record around...

It's ok you don't have to PM me.

Quote
First of all, gun politics are a very important part of American society and culture. Gun politics play an equal role in politics as the economy, abortion, foreign policy. Mass murders on campuses were caused by mentally deranged people, not law abiding gun owners. I think that we should not be so politically correct about this, guns do not kill, people kill. What I want to do is to educate people and promote firearm safety. I want to dispel myths that many people and the media have about firearms. I hold freedom of speech to the highest regard, and we should all do so because we are in Berkeley. Just because I want to talk about firearms, doesn't mean that I am going to end up killing people. So yeah, I do know the full implications of talking about firearms on campus, but I do not care. I can talk about it because that's my first amendment right.

You don't seem very adept at reading between the lines so I'll state it bluntly: (Almost) no one at UC Berkeley cares or even own a gun.  This ain't the back woods where you go hunting with your daddy every weekend.

You think you're "educating" people by "exercising your freedom of speech" to talk about "2nd amendment rights."  I'm willing to bet it makes you feel all fuzzy inside when you say that.  Let's be brutally honest here: It all sounds great in theory but when you put it into practice, and when crazy-turned normal people put your "education" into practice, people are going to get hurt or die.  The truth is when you "promote gun safety" by "going to the shooting range every once in a while" you give the looney ones the idea to use firearms for his/her own benefit.

Thinking about guns and especially of using them at college is just about the worst thing that can happen.  Why do you need guns or even have to think about them anyway?  Even more so why bother with gun safety when virtually no one owns them?  They bring more trouble than good.

You're more than welcome to make a club, but I wouldn't guarantee you'd get a lot of interested people, and certainly not many if at all interested people on these forums.

Well even though I'm personally against guns, I don't think trying to start a club is a bad idea. There are so many people on campus, and if 0.1% join it'll still be quite a large organization.

Archery seems to be pretty popular, so why wouldn't there be people who want to go to shooting ranges or something? And they could hold info-sessions and things like that if they like... try things out.

There aren't that many people on these forums though so it's unlikely you'll get anyone here... but you might.

To The Infinity Point,

It's ok you don't have to PM me.

You don't seem very adept at reading between the lines so I'll state it bluntly: (Almost) no one at UC Berkeley cares or even own a gun.  This ain't the back woods where you go hunting with your daddy every weekend.

That's odd, cause I know two people that like hunting. I'm also pretty sure there are ROTC members that are interested as well. First off, I posted this topic because this was the only forum I found that had anything to do with UC Berkeley clubs and organizations. I wasn't expecting anybody to post, it was just something I felt I could do to get started with this club or at least meeting new people.

I think you misunderstood me .To get on your second point, you can not assume that people who likes guns are going to turn "looney". Now, granted that if I saw someone who obviously did not talk, or showed signs of some mental problems, I would definitely report that to authorities. Assuming this club did get started, it doesn't have to be on guns, it doesn't have to teach everyone how to shoot. It could very well just talk about gun politics, we could debate with other clubs on the issue of gun control. We could talk about hunting rights, promote or be against important gun legislation. Think about it, if there is are pro-life clubs on campus, pro-choice clubs on campus, democrat clubs, republican clubs, why can't I make a club that talks about gun politics? I didn't say that we should teach everyone to shoot, it was an idea. For now though, I believe that a club about gun control, gun politics, hunting rights, is very possible. Something about the politics of firearms, not necessarily the use of them.

I never stated that...

What are you going to tell them?  "OMG.  That quiet kid over there is going to kill someone."  Hahaha.

Get over it you're in California now, and most Californians aren't into guns as much as Virginians or Texans.

So please, make your club, and tell me how many members you get.

Ok, so you are going to make an illogical assumption that people who don't support gun control are not from California. Listen dude, I lived in this state for 10 years, I haven't lived anywhere else. What you assume is that people who join my club are going to kill people, which is the dumbest thing I ever heard. I started this post because I wanted to see if there are any people here that shared the same views on gun control as me. I didn't start this post so people like you can belittle my views or start an argument with me. If you don't like guns, please don't enforce your opinions on me or anyone else for that matter.

whoa there son.  take it easy.  I'm not the one who started an "argument."  I never said "people who join my club are going to kill people."  I'd very much like for you to highlight where I said that...assuming you can find it ;-).  Besides I'm only saying I know hardly anybody who owns a gun and cares about the NRA etc.  Actually the scarcity of posts besides our casual musings on this thread can already attest to that.  And what good will it do me to belittle you, or even to force my opinions on you, of all people?

No one cares about guns.  Get over it.

PS
Listen dude, I lived in this state for 10 years, I haven't lived anywhere else.

Whoa really so that means you're only 10 years old?
