I bought a bike two days before i got caught a cop.. and I had no idea
what dismount zone was... and It was my first time riding a bike at Berkeley..

But, they charged me $212 for riding a bike in the dismount zone???

They are having such a difficult time along with UC budget that trying to soak up the money out of student's pocket with a $69.99 bike?

this is ridiculous..

To be fair, just like driving in another country or another state, you should really should have educated yourself on the laws and rules here before you rode your bike through campus.

It is a lot, though.

Sounds like cruel and unusual punishment.  Is there any way you can challenge it?

Appearing to court is one way to deal with it..
not sure how much they can deduct, though..

still,, this doesn't make any sense to me at all..

I don't think having an expensive or cheap bike matters for getting a ticket...
$212 is kind of steep, but you could seriously hurt someone by running them over with a bike. I'm sure you weren't going that fast (I hope), but they do have the dismount zone for a reason.

Jaywalking also carries a pretty steep fine.

Laws are for people who are too stupid to make the right decision in the first place.

I've been attending the Senate meetings on Wednesday nights in Eshleman for the past couple of months and Sergeant Tucker said they give warnings for about the first month (through September), then they let us know when they started giving citations.

One thing you can ask for INSTEAD OF PAYING THE FULL FINE, is to do community service. You will have to specifically say you'd like to know if there's an alternative to paying the cash amount for them to mention that to you though.

Good luck

I think $212 is excessive.

My father got fined a similar amount for stopping his car in the bus zone for a few seconds, even though there was no bus there.

Same thing happened to me...anyone have experience with this? Is there a way to reduce the fine?
