I'm a Spring Admit - first semester at Cal. Any input on my first round of courses? (14 units)

UGBA 10
MCELLBI 15
COLWRIT R1A
MATH 16A

Applying to Haas as a Business major with Econ as a backup. I have most of my breadth done from community college. Now its mainly a focus on prereq classes.

Thank you for your advice and time!

I for your Reading part A req. I haven't heard nice things about college writing... I would suggest a themed R(1-5)A, like Slavic R4A or however it is structured.

I would go to courserank.com to check our ratings of courses.

Also, if you're looking into econ as a backup, I would recommend Math 1A and Math 1B. Especially since, if you end up doing Econ as your major, you'll want these. Plus, Econ grad school will need higher math. And if you've done some calculus, you should really do the 1A, 1B series (unless math is really, really not your thing-- though business deals a lot with numbers...)

I would definitely suggest choosing an R1A that is on a topic that really interests you (I did Celtic Studies because that semester, they were doing mythology). Usually the themed courses are a little easier to handle, because you're studying a more specific subject.

At the very least, make sure the class you're taking is something that you really want to learn about. The spring 2010 course descriptions for the College Writing R1A class are listed at http://writing.berkeley.edu/newsite/classes-spring2010.htm#cwr1a . These tell you specifically what area your class will be teaching on (to me, these look a bit dull).

Well, your classes are bearable, it is good if you can choose something else as your R1A, but CWR1A is not a bad idea either. I took it and got a good grade, and I am a science person. I guess it all depends on which instructor and what topic you got for the class. UGBA is competitive, but you got no choice but take it if you want to get into business school. Good luck!
